This is the ONLY blog this week!
Do you remember the days when you were younger and your parents would read stories to you before going to bed?
Tell me about your favorite childhood story? Why was it your favorite?
Do you spend time reading before going to sleep?
Explain.

When I was a bit younger, my dad used to read to my brother and I, pretty much every night. He used to read fantasy and mystery to us, and we both loved it. My favourite book that he read to us was one by Terry Pratchett. It told a story about a young girl meeting special fairies and told how they always went on adventures. Once I began to read by myself, I quickly came very find of the murder mystery type of genre. I slowly stopped having interest in my dad reading bedtime stories, and started reading my own. My favourite murder mystery book is “A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder” by Holly Jackson. Lately, I haven’t really been reading all that much balancing swimming, homework and school, but I still love reading.

Ooh nice blog! I have a friend who read that book (A good girl's guide to murder) And she recommended it to me but if I brought it home my mother would disown me under 8 seconds
DeleteGreat blog though!!
When I was younger, my favorite childhood story had to be "Hansel and Gretel". My mom would read it to me every night, I loved it because it taught me to be grateful for what I have and not be greedy for what I don't have. It made me realize it is important to stay healthy because I did not want to be trapped by the witch and eaten.
ReplyDeleteSarah Legault
I really like your point of view of Hansel and Gretel
Deletewhen I was younger my dad would read me story about space and I would love it but I don't remember what it was called he would read it to me every day.it was my favorite because at that age I knew nothing about space so it was so interesting to hear. I still spend time reading every night but not as much as before. Now I read Harry potter. I really like the story so that's why I like to read it most nights.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Duquette
good job i also read harry potter
DeleteMy favorite childhood story was “The Twelve Dancing Princesses”. My family had the hardcover, and it’s still in my library right now. Sometimes when I’m feeling bored, I’ll take it out and read it again. It was my favorite story because I didn’t think much of the actual writing. I only like to see the pictures, and that’s how I understood the story. All the beautiful drawings of flowers, the silver forest, the gold forest, the diamond forest, and the castle. The ballroom was bright and cheerful, and so were the outfits. I appreciate the writing more nowadays, because even with the pictures I couldn’t really tell what was happening. I do still read before bed, maybe a bit too much. Right now I’m reading the Harry Potter series, but I like Judy Blume's best, because most of them are about girls around twelve, and are facing problems that any twelve year old girl will have.
ReplyDeleteFiona Fitzpatrick
Nice job, I also read Judy Blume's books.
DeleteI love Judy Blumes books and harry potter too! Nice blog :)
DeleteThanks :)
DeleteMy parents used to always read books to me before bed. I don't remember what but I think it was about animals. I remember one book (I don't know what it's called) that was about learning animal sounds. I don't read much before bed now because why read before bed when I could be watching The Office. But the main reason I don't read before bed is because I don't like to, since I forget what happens after I go to sleep after a few minutes of reading.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger my favorite story that my parents would tell me was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by: Eric Carle. Its about a very hungry caterpillar who eats everything and after eating too much he gets a stomach ache then he ate through a nice green leaf and he felt better. After that he became a big fat caterpillar and built a cocoon and after he turned into a butterfly. Now I don't spend as much time reading in bed but now i'm trying to do it more.
ReplyDelete-Desmond Colbeck-Salam-
The very hungry caterpillar was also one of my favorites.
DeleteMe too. Our class used to ask our librarian to read the Hungary Caterpillar every week.
DeleteMe three
DeleteWhen I was younger, my parents always read me a bedtime story, my favorite was called “Dear zoo”. It was about a boy who wrote to the zoo, asking for a pet. Every time the zoo answered, they sent him a pet that wasn't right for him (a lion, a snake, an alligator etc). At the end, he got a dog and the boy was happy. It was my favorite because there were certain parts of the story that were really funny (at the time) like the animals doing silly things. Nowadays I usually read before bed because I find it helps me sleep. Currently I am reading a book called “Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite bedtime stories when I was younger was called Cap’s for Sale. My sister and I used to LOVE that story. It was about a man who sold caps, but instead of having them in a bag, he wore them on his head. Then he sat down to rest under a tree, only to find out that a bunch of monkeys took his caps! This was my favourite story, because when my dad would read it to me, he would read it in a really funny way with funny voices, and it always made me laugh. I usually read before bed every night, except if i’m really tired. I don’t read any book in particular, just whatever I feel like reading if it’s in my bookcase. Most of the time, I am not able to fall asleep if I haven’t read yet.
ReplyDelete-Sarah Rubin
I absolutely love that story!
DeleteMy favorite book
ReplyDeleteMy favorite story when I was little was The monster at the end of this book. This book basically describes a monster and the monster turns out to be the main character.Which in my case was Elmo. This story was my favorite because when I was younger I was obsessed with Elmo.
I usually dont read before I go to bed I normally end up watching tv until its time to go to bed and then fall asleep. If I have alot of time and I dont want to watch tv then maybe I will read a chapter of my book wich by the way is called murder ink.
Of course, I remember my family reading bedtime stories! Every night my mom would take out this big book with over 200 bedtime stories and fairytales in it. We would read a different story every night. One of my favorites of them all was the ugly duckling. I recall my mom making a cute little voice for the ugly duckling.
ReplyDeleteAs most people know, the ugly duckling is about an ugly duck that was the odd one out of the group of baby ducks that were hatched. He was bullied and was always made fun of. Although, at the end of the story when the duckling gives up hope on people liking him, he ends up to be a beautiful swan. The moral of the story is to not judge someone by the way they look because they might have a great personality (and a personality is more important than looks). My favorite part of the story is the moral.
I still like reading now, I just don’t usually get into many books. I usually have some kind of thing that I know I have to do before reading. Honestly, I think I’m more interest in my other hobbies than reading
-Ella Stewart
Amazing job Ella ! I love how you added what the moral of the story is. I agree that people should not judge someone based on the way they look.

My favorite bedtime story growing up was The paper bag princess. I think it was my favorite because it seemed so daring for her to rescue the prince and it always made me happy to hear. I do spend time reading before bed but as much as in elementary school. I love to read realistic fiction and I would love to read more but I have more classes than I did before elementary.
ReplyDeleteSamantha
I read that book too! It's very interesting :)
DeleteI remember when my parents used to read me and my siblings stories. My favorite book if I remember correctly was a custom made lion king that has mine and my siblings names and I think it was favorite because 1 lion king was my favorite movie at the time and 2 it has my name in it. I dont normally read before bed but I do read when I can and I read this really cool book series called Bravelands.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite childhood story is: Are you my Mother by Dr.Seuss. This story is about a baby bird searching for his mother, not knowing how she looks because she left to get food for him. I loved trying to guess all the animals with my mom. Most nights, I try to read before going to bed but I tend to go to sleep while reading.
ReplyDeleteKris
I liked that story so much too!
DeleteYes I remember when my parents read me and my brothers stories before bed my dad read us Italian stories and my mom read us English ones . My favorite stories was one my mom came up with about a blue horse and that's what she called that story The Blue Horse. I like that story still because me and my brothers are in it and because its in the story and shows how much my mom loves me and my brothers. I still spend time reading before falling asleep but only on the weekends but when I do read I read novels like Artemis Fowl series the Endling series(so basically big chapter books).
ReplyDeleteMy favourite story as a kid was probably “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. I haven’t read this story in a very long time so I can’t really remember why I liked it so much but my mom has told me that I used to love that story a lot. I personally don’t read that often, especially right before I go to bed.
ReplyDelete-Noah Tremblay
Every night, my mom used to read me the same story every night. I think it was called alphabet rescue. I barely remember what the story was about but my mom told me that i used to want to read it every single night. I’m not sure why I used to love it but it was really fun to read before bed.

When I was younger my parents wouldn't read me any bedtime stories before going to sleep.Instead my father used to tell me Greek mythological legends such as the Trojan War, Theseus and the Minotaur, the Odyssey and many more. My favorite was the Trojan War because I thought it was very interesting how they came up with the idea to hide inside a wooden horse and trick the Trojans by believing it was a gift for them. By doing this, they successfully entered Troy with the mission to get Menelaus' wife Helen back after being abducted by Paris, The Prince of Troy. My dad also teaches Canadian history, so when I was really young he would practice his lectures on me before teaching his students. That didn't make me want another bedtime story! Lately, I haven't been reading as much since I have been concentrating more on finishing my homework and studying for tests.
ReplyDelete-Alessa Kokkonis
Oh wow! I love mythology so I find that very interesting! Amazing blog Alessa!

DeleteOkay, ummm. My parents wouldn't read me stories and when they did, I was too young to remember them. And I learned how to read at like 3 or 4 or maybe 5, I don't remember. Then I would read myself. I didn't have a favorite story, but a favorite movie instead. It is a movie not a lot of people have watched (please let me know in the comments if you have watched it!). I was 8 and I was scrolling through our collection of movies and found one in particular that charmed me with it's simple art style, the beautiful title forcing me to click on the movie. The title was called "Song of the Sea" from the animation studio called Cartoon Saloon. I had never heard of the movie since they studio has it's main base set in Ireland (and other Eurasian countries)! The start itself was with a quote: "Come away, o human child/ To the waters and the wild/ With a faerie, hand in hand/ For this world is more full of weeping than you can understand" I didn't really understand most of what they were saying because, the story was based on Irish mythology (my favorite genre!) and the voice actors were speaking in an Irish accent. When I rewatched it at age 11, I was touched. Then I was encountered with a beautiful Irish song called Amhrán Na Farraige (Which translates to Song of the sea in Irish)
ReplyDeleteOkay, enough about the starting, the movie is based on the Irish/Scottish/Celtic myth of selkies, magical creatures that can turn into seals with the help of their coat made of seal skin. The skin can be taken from a newborn selkie and since they can't transform without their coat, their lives are not in danger. Once they have transformed for the first time, they have to keep doing it every now and then or else the will die of rapid aging.
Bronagh, (pronounced as brŌ-naah) is the mother of Ben, her son and is pregnant with her daughter Saoirse (pronounced as Seer-shah) and the wife of Conor. Bronagh is a selkie and when she is tucking, four-year-old Ben and their dog Cú (pronounced as Koo) into bed, she suddenly goes into labor. She rushes outside the lighthouse (where they live, by the Irish sea in Dublin) and transforms into a seal. Later on, she gives birth to Saoirse, wrapped in a glowing coat of seal skin, (signifying she is a selkie) is returned to the shore by the sea, but Bronagh is not to be found. Ben practically hates Saoirse since it's her fault their mother died.
There will be a part 2 cuz my blog is too long!
Part twoooo!!!!.
ReplyDeleteOn the night of her sixth birthday, she decides to go to her mother's old room. She finds a chest with a key to it. Opening the chest out of her childlike curiosity, she finds her coat of seal skin. She goes by the shore and transforms into a seal. This is one of my favorite scenes because the screenplay and the music make this scene beyond perfect. Their grandmother, who was convincing Conor to let them stay with her in the city of Dublin, because it is "dangerous and depressing" by the lighthouse. She finds Saoirse by the shore, washed up and takes her inside. Now she has transformed, she has to do it again or she will die. Conor, not knowing that, throws her coat away and their grandmother takes them to the city. Will they find Saoirse's coat? Will she be okay? Will Saoirse and Ben's relationship as sibling grow stronger or weaker?
Conclusion: This movie, had me in tears. A kids movie, rated G, had me experience an emotion called Hiraeth, a blend of homesickness, nostalgia and longing to a place that you've never been to (source: www.bbc.com).
Facts:
An anime called My Hero Academia or Boku no Hero Academia has a pro hero (I thhink hes a pro) named Selkie and his quirk (power) is spotted seal ( so he has the powers of a seal) So MHA has some Irish Mythology in it!
The children of Selkies never drown
This movie was set in the 1980's but was released in 2014
Song of the Sea has won two awards (European Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film, Satellite Award for Best Animated or Mixed Media Feature) and I'm prett sure it was nominated for an Oscar.
I will DEFINETLY recommend this movie along with the other movies Cartoon Saloon has made (The Secret of Kells, The Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers) They are animated but they release the inner child of every teen/ adult and is very touching to me
Wow Aahna great blog, Lots of writing!
DeleteMy favorite childhood story was definitely Alice In Wonderland. I have a very big imagination so fantasy books intrigue me. I enjoy picturing what is going on in the story in my head. When i was little, everyday before bed, my mom and I would read a bit of the book. It took us a few months to read the entire thing because I kept questioning things as I am very curious. Eventually, we had finished the book and it was very worth it. I still love the book to this day, in fact I have it right next to me. I have read the book around eight times almost nine! I still haven't gotten bored of it because the book is so interesting and genuinely amazing. I really enjoy fairy tales and reading and I hope to read new, interesting books in the future!

When I was younger my parents would always read me stories before bed. And when I was really young my parents would sing to me, the song I recall the most is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I loved when my parents would sing or read to me.
ReplyDeleteMy mom always wanted us to get into reading, so she and my dad read to my brother and I from an early age. I don’t believe I had a favourite book, I used to love all the Disney Princesses. But my favourite thing above all was to listen to my father make up stories about how he used to be a caveman, and he would tell my brother and I all about his adventures. It was a lot of fun because I truly believed that he was telling the truth, and that he really had been a caveman in his past life.
I do read before going to bed every night, usually it's not the same book every night, because I’m always going through multiple books at a time. For example, right now I’m in the middle of reading, Gone by Michael Grant, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, and The Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare.
I used to sing twinkle twinkle little too!! Good job!
DeleteWhen I was younger my dad would always let me choose the book that he would read to me before bed. One that I remember him always reading to me was called "The giving tree" by Shel Silverstein.
ReplyDeleteI liked it because I found that the story's plot was very good. I do read sometimes before going to bed. Some books I have read were books like Twilight, New moon and I am currently reading Eclipse, all by Stephanie Meyer. My dad would also always make up stories, I don't remember what they were about now, but, I remember absolutely loving when he would make up stories because he would make up very very funny ones.
My mom would sometimes make up stories for me as well.
DeleteVery Interesting

oh the giving tree gives me nostalgia!!!
DeleteI love the giving tree! I used to read it all the time

ReplyDeleteMy mom used to read stories for me almost every night before I want to bed. She stopped when I was 8 because I was reading books on my own by then. And she did the same for my brother. Most of the time I would fall asleep though.I still do read before I go to bed. I just really don't like books about fantasy. I like stories that are actually somewhat believable (yes this does mean i'm not a fan of harry potter) I don't like magical stories or anything like that. When i'm tired I usually read for 30 minutes before I fall asleep but normally I read longer.
-Liam S.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger before I would go to my bed my parents would read me older nursery rhymes and fairy tales. But those books were the older version so for example in the story my parents read to me the three little pigs did not end after the wolf was burned in a pot, it keeps on going. Some of the stories were really weird but funny, Note to self the name might sound controversial but nonetheless it was called little black sambo, It was about a kid who got new cloth but three but tigers threatened to at home o he treated his new cloth and umbrella and shoe to the tiger, So they started arguing until they started chasing one onion other untitled they turned into butter, witch I think samboo nd his family ate. In additions to storys my parents also sung me songs we also read a lot of dr seuss
