 Today is ORANGE SHIRT DAY!

What does Orange Shirt Day symbolize?

What are the lasting impacts of the Residential School System on Indigenous individuals, Peoples and communities?

‘Every child matters’ is the slogan for Orange Shirt Day. For what reasons is it an appropriate slogan? How can we ensure that this slogan remains TRUE?

Explain.

  1. Today is orange shirt day. I know a little about it, I know that we celebrate it because we have to remember what some kids went through at residential schools. Orange shirt day symbolizes the pain that people had to go through. Residential schools impacted Canada a lot. It made kids scared to go to school and parents scared to send their kids to school. I don't see why every child would not matter, all I know is that every child does matter. I'm glad residential schools are over because it was a terrible thing in Canadian history.

  2. Thursday way orange shirt day, a day to honour all the indigenous children that attended these "schools" and many who didn't make it back home to loving families (morning announcement flashbacks). Orange shirt day was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad. She was given an orange shirt by her grandmother that she would wear on her first day of school. As I said in a previous blog, her belongings were taken from her, including that shirt. The lasting impacts of these so-called schools is intergenerational trauma, grief, psychological trauma, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and much more, some feelings can't be named. The slogan.... gives me mixed feelings. Yes, I know only children attended these schools, but Everyone (I don't mean everyone as humans. I mean as living creatures of this planet) matters, so I think the slogan should be "Every Life Matters"
Finally, this reminded me of the lyrics of a song called "Infections of a different kind" by Aurora Aksnes.

    Infections of a different kind
The world is being attacked by your pain
If I'm the world then why would I hurt
    All that is living?
And if there is a God, would he then believe in us?
And if there is a God, I think he can't hear all of us
    Belong to a soul
Be God in the shape of a girl
    Who walks this world
And I beg, I beg to be drained
From the pain I've soaked myself in
    So I can stay okay
And more than okay for a while
For a while, for a while

    No I'm not depressed^^

  3. Orange shirt day symbolises truth and reconciliation day. I think that the effects of the schools is way bigger than we think maybe not for you or me but for all of those indigenous kids who had to grow up not knowing their own culture and they weren't able to show their kids or grand kids there culture. I think the slogan " Every child matters " because its true every child does matter and i think that to keep it true we need to treat everyone the same so than their will be no inequality.
