The Chinese government are taking BACK TO SCHOOL to a whole NEW level!

The Chinese government is proposing a law that limits children under 18 to less than 90 minutes of playing video games on weekdays and three hours on weekends, with no video game playing allowed between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

What do you think about this proposal?
Why do you feel the Chinese government is making this proposal?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of this proposal?

Explain.

Comments

  1. If I were to live in China I would have a hard time because I love playing video games like fortnite madden NBA ect. I love playing video because it's awesome how many different types there are. I play like 3 hours a night and 6-8 hours on the weekend. I think China should remove the limit or at least extend it because video games could be a motivation “ if you finish your homework you get to play” is what my mom says and that's why I do my homework so that I get to play. The main reason China should extend the time is because video games are a great way to socialize with your friends, especially in the pandemic. What if you live in China and you're a youtuber and you can't upload content for your subscribers.

  2. I think that they should add a few more hours, but at the same time I don't think it is that bad. I have some friends who are only allowed to be on electronic devices (other then for school) from 4 pm to maybe 6 pm or sometimes even 5 pm, but that is only for weekdays. During the weekends, they still have limited screen time but it is more then 3 hours. I find that this law could be a little tweaked for the weekend but it isn't really horrible for the weekdays. It can make it so that the kids can focus more about school on weekdays, but then they can just be kids and have fun on weekends, a weekend for a kid is like a day off of work for an adult. It could even make kids more grateful for the screen time they get, I know my friend is.

  3. In my personal opinion, this law is absurd. Yes, it might allow you to be more focused during school hours, and yes, it might give you more energy. Fair point. But it could also lower some skills, for example, hand eye coordination, risk taking, patience and perseverance, concentration, and even strategizing. In all, I believe that this law should not pass. If it were me I would most definitely be arrested.

  4. I think that it's a smart decision, that the Chinese government is limiting screen time. Though I disagree about how they are doing it. Instead they should be giving notice to the parents before making this decision. They should say that it's not good for kids too be on it for so long , but in the end still leave it up to the parents.

  5. In my opinion, it’s a bit of a strange thing to propose. As Colten said in his comment, most parents say their kids can’t play video games until they have done their homework. As a result, it is kind of like an incentive for them to do their homework. In my household, I never play over 90 minutes of video games on the weekdays anyways, and never play at 10. So in my case, it wouldn't do much. I think that the Chinese government is proposing this law because it will probably help kids focus better on their school work. There are studies at Harvard that prove that the blue light emitted from screens can suppress melatonin, the sleep hormone. This is why it is not recommended to use your phone or play video games before bed. A disadvantage of this proposal is that video games are a great way to sharpen your motor skills and teamwork skills, which are very important. In conclusion, parents should decide on how much their children should play and when they can, and not the government.

    1. I agree that parents should decide on how much their children play video games. I think it is a good point

  6. I think that this proposal is interesting since it is very relevant today. It is a problem that many of the older generations talk about.
I think that there are advantages and disadvantages to this proposal.
An advantage of no video games between 8 pm and 10 am is that you have more time to sleep; and of course, sleep is very important for brain development, growth, and many other things that help your body. Another advantage of this proposal is that on the weekends, instead of playing video games all day, you could spend time with your family, pets, friends, which is important and helps you become a more sociable person. You could enjoy nature, go on walks, there are so many things that you can do instead of playing video games all day. Video games can also take up time that you could have spent studying for a test or an exam and doing homework.
The only disadvantage that I can see, is for the children or students who play educational games, and that have learning difficulties and need a certain application to help them read, write, learn, etc.
In my opinion, the Chinese government is proposing this because they want people to socialize with others and their family.

  7. I believe that the Chinese government should impose this law about limiting children's screen time.Children should be concentrating on their studies and figuring out what they want to do with their lives instead of playing video games. They should also be socializing with people in person and not over some game.I also think that they must be getting some physical activity and not sit all day in front of a screen. In conclusion, I affirm that this law is for each child's best interest.

  8. My Respose (Aahna)

I have heard about the proposal before and the first time I saw it I was thinking " What. Did. I. Just. See."So, I think that this idea has some ups and downs. Kids should be free to play as much as they want to play BUT too much is really bad as you guys know.

Firstly, I think the time limit is good. No child should be having screen time after 8 or even 7:30 (if you want a good night's sleep). since blue light can cause your brain to go into "stay awake mode". Also, its bad for your eyes since they need a break too! If you have ever known what it feels like to see your phone screen in the middle of the night. Its strains your eyes and- oh the p a i n. Therefore, the time limit is pretty agreeable in my opinion.

My second point is a disadvantage. My parents never really set rules and regulations for screen time for me, apart from the occasional "get off your laptop/phone", they never really said anything to me as they believed if a child can access anything whenever they want, they learn to control themselves since that thing isn't very special to them. But this depends from child to child. Not every child is mature for their age and not every family rules are the same. Therefore this might lead to communism in their life later on because, who would want to have their screen time decided by the government?

My third point is that people should understand that we children/teens are in a generation that most adults don't understand. Technology is advancing and so should we! I'm not saying let your child play 5 hours a day, I'm saying, don't tell them what to do unless you need to. Like we all hate it when we want to be a good son/daughter/child and do some chores then our parents just say " remember to do your chores". We really hate it! So pressurising them might not help at all.
This reminds me of the Parkinson's Law which is: work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion. In simpler terms, If I gave you 5 days to study for a test, you will take your sweet, precious 5 days to do that, basically, you will stretch the task longer than you need to (source https://effectiviology.com>parkinson's law) . You will most probably study for an hour and then eat a snack and then maybe even watch a movie. And at the last day you will still be rushing through the task.

    Conclusion:
Instead of limiting their game time, limit their work deadlines. The more the deadline is out of your comfort zone, the more you will want to get that weight off of your shoulders. And instead of having everyone have the same amount. Keep the night time limit.

    Things they can improve:
-have this rule decided by parents
Maybe if they get a good grade they get more minutes and if their homework is late, take away minutes. this way they will be motivated to do better in school
-Maybe make the age limit under 12 because most adolescents know how to make the right choices ( Hey, I said MOST)

  9. I think this proposal is in theory good because it limits the time spent on technology instead of doing homework. But ninety minutes after school is a lot considering that you still have to eat dinner, go to bed at a healthy time and do your homework. Its good because it can help to stop addictions to games. Now that more and more things are online like for example now how i am commenting, I'd get how the government would want to maybe force a little break from all the screen time for younger people. Personally i think that it should and would be up to my parents to decide my screen time limit and if I where in china with that rule i would be upset and would need a bit of time to adapt. A down side of this proposal is that some people use video games like for example Minecraft to create so its a way for them to release their creativity and maybe gain interest in someday becoming a architect or designer so if they limit kids time on tec. they are also in ways limiting their imagination.

  10. I think that they should not implement this law. I personally love playing video games, so I know if I lived in China I wouldn't like that. I think I could work really well but it could also totally flop. The upside is that all the kids would get more time to do homework and hang out with friends but those who play lots of video daily would feel a huge impact because they aren't used to it plus on rainy days or days where you don't have anything to do it could get pretty boring. So that is why I think the Chinese shouldn't implement this law.

  11. I think that the Chinese government is making the right decision but at the same time I don't. It is important for kids to play video games to give themselves a break from homework, school etc… but if they play for too long, it ends up not being good for them. If I had to put a limit on how much video games kids play during the week, I would put a maximum amount of 30-45 minutes a day.

  12. I think the law is not very smart, I feel that limiting people from doing what they enjoy is absurd. Yet, I understand why they are imposing this law. They are most likely doing this to help the children instead of limiting their options. There are many advantages to this like: kids having more time to study, do their homework etc, but this can also make a lot of kids upset and may cause kids to always be bored and never have anything to do. For example, when I'm bored, I usually play video games with my friends, but with this law I would most likely not be able to do that and I would have to find something else to do. I think there are many pros and many cons to this law but it really depends on how you view it.

  13. I believe that this proposal could benefit the education of many children as well as brain function, eyesight and sleep. Electronics truly damage the human brain, doctors have done a study showing that children who have spent more than two hours a day on screen-time activities received a lower mark on thinking tests and language, and some children with more than seven hours a day of screen time experienced thinning of the brain’s cortex, the area of the brain for critical thinking and reasoning. Screen time should be limited for obvious reasons, for example; it is a distraction to all kids, they will not try as hard on their school work so can play on their electronic devices, ect. This is probably why the Chinese government is making this proposal.
The proposal the Chinese government has made could help children in many ways, not only could it help children but it could also help adults. If it is also enforced on adults. However I do not believe it is for the government to enforce this rule on anybody.
I believe that could be a great idea, if parents are the ones to enforce this rule on their children if they chose to. However it is not the government's job to do what the parents and children must do. It is the parents job to make sure that their child is not failing because of video games, and it is also the children’s responsibility to make sure that they balance their video game time and study time.

I believe what Colten's has said about EARNING your ability to play video games, is the most practical and resonable thing to do.

  14. I think that it is a good idea because being on a screen for too long can make your eyes dry, and I saw a documentary on how screens can effect anyone and they said that after 9pm if your on a screen your focus levels will go down by a large percentage by the next day, and maybe the day after. another thing it can do is make not able to sleep which can effect a 4-15 year old.

  16. I think that this rule is somewhat ridiculous because some video games can be very good for kids to develop their brain. Online interactions and playing with your friends over the internet in my opinion is also socialising in a way. If you're safe enough, you can even make new friends from all around the world while playing video games. This rule wouldn't make sense, they could try to encourage people to spend less time on video games. But not put a limitation that stops them from playing games entirely. Now, I don't think kids should spend all there time on video games, they should defensible try new things, the only actual reason they would have to reinforce such a strict law would be in the majority of kids are below the required grade level in school, and it was because they spent their entire day on video games. In conclusion, I think this rule is not such a great enforcement since kids discover and build parts of their brain playing video games.

  17. I think it is a good proposal because this strategy will prevent children in China from becoming addicted to videogames. If most of their day consists of playing video games, then they become out of touch with the outside world. Furthermore, sitting still in one space with their eyes locked on the screen will damage their eyes over time .This sort of lifestyle is very bad for growing boys and girls who need a healthy lifestyle. Children will get more sleep during the night. This will enable them to be more active throughout the day, and become more attentive during class. More time will be spent doing homework. On the other hand this drastic change will increase the rate of teenage depression in China , some might downright revolt . Another disadvantage is that this law will leave many gaming industries who depend on the children that play will go bankrupt. People will lose their jobs and even go homeless if they cannot pay their bills.

  18. I think its a good idea that kids under 18 are only allowed maximum 90 minutes on weekdays and 3 hours on weekends because it allows them to focus more on school then on video games and when they are over 18 (graduated high school) they can play for longer because they are already very smart and knowledgeable and i think have the choice of going to college

  19. I personally agree with the decision that the Chinese government has made. Screen time is not good for the human brain after being used for a long amount of time. In addition to that, as Anna said the blue light isn’t good or the humans’ eyes either. The blue light can cause minor effect on your brain that will give you a hard time wanting to stop playing your game. When this comes into action kids may end up playing video games or using their phones after there bedtime, which means that their brain won’t get enough time to charge up for the next school day ahead of them. This could be one of the many reasons why the Chinese government is making these laws.
In my perspective there are hardly any disadvantages to this situation, except for how disappointed children would be to find out these rules were put up by the government.
In my opinion, the rules for the week days make perfect sense. Although, I believe weekends that children should be able to chose what they would like to do since its their day off. Their parents may decide if they want to put different rules up or mor for their children if needed. Even though, I absolutely agree on the government decision I think children should have a little freedom.

  20. I think they should modify this idea, just a bit. Overall, I understand why they thought of this. They’re trying to reduce the amount of screentime that children use. This idea has cons, but also pros. The kids can accept that they will get in trouble and take that time where they were playing video games, and use that time to work on their studies and schoolwork . Then again, they could also rebel, and refuse to cooperate with the law, and totally refuse to work at all, without their video games. This is a very, CREATIVE idea, but I think they should try to tweek it before putting this law in place. Maybe add a few more hours during the weekend. Also, I find that their government is placing this problem on their own shoulders, when the responsibility is on the children. They’re the ones who have a future to think about. If they have free time before or after school, they have the responsibility to use that time to maybe do something around their school assignments. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t play their games at all. But they do have to be responsible and I feel like the government is assuming that their children are too “immature'' to make their own decisions. In conclusion, I'm not opposed to this idea, just maybe they can change it a bit.

  21. I personally think that it would be good for kids under 18 to play less video games because it would allow for more studying and to spend more time with family and friends .But for some kids they might of had a dream to become a youtuber for example but then that makes it a lot harder for them to pursue their dream .In my opinion I think that it would be hard to live without videos games on the weekdays and 3 hours on weekends because i love after a day at school to play video games with my friends.

  22. I personally think that China took this law too far, I think that the parents should decide how much they want their children to play. I believe that kids should be able to play video games with moderation, 3 hours a day would be okay.

I think that the advantages of video games would be that you can play with your friends through video games which is great since not everyone can be with their friends and family during the pandemic, i also think that even though it isn't very common, some people make money off of playing video games from youtube. And for some people video games can be good if you're having a bad day and just want to have some fun.

Some disadvantages of video games coud be addiction, lack of motivation, poor mental health and more.
I do think that there should be a law on how much video games kids play but i think that it should be 3-4 instead of what it is in China.

  23. I think that this proposal could be beneficial for the youth of China. I believe that the Chinese government has put in place this proposal because of the addiction to video games. The advantages are that the youth have more time to invest in their education and in other interests. The disadvantages are that due to the fact that they have limited time , the gamers won't be able to compete and enter tournaments because tournaments require a large amount of time.
